TRAI New Regulations: Major Changes Coming to Curb Scams and Fraud in Indian Telecom Sector

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to implement crucial new regulations aimed at combating scammers and fraudsters in the telecom sector. With increasing concerns over spam messages, fraudulent calls, and unauthorized OTP requests, TRAI is taking decisive action by instructing telecom operators to adopt measures to prevent such activities.

Originally slated for November 1, 2024, the enforcement date for these regulations has now been extended to December 1, 2024. Let’s delve into the specifics of these new rules and how they aim to protect consumers from fraud.

Key Features of TRAI’s New Regulations

Starting December 1, 2024, all banks, e-commerce platforms, and financial institutions will be required to maintain a traceability record of all transactional and service messages. Under the new rules, if messages are not sent in compliance with these traceability requirements, they will be blocked, including OTP messages.

In addition, telecom operators have been granted a one-month extension to identify specific keywords associated with spam and fraudulent activities. Numbers flagged for sending spam or fraudulent messages will be preemptively blocked by the telecom companies. This proactive approach extends not just to unsolicited calls and messages but also to OTP communications, thereby tightening security measures across the board.

A Tougher Stance on Scammers

The upcoming regulations signify a strong stance against scammers who exploit users through deceptive messages, links, and unauthorized OTP requests. The new rules will help deter these fraudulent activities, making it increasingly difficult for scammers to target unsuspecting individuals.
