Toyota First EV to Emerge from Suzuki India by Spring 2025: A Strategic Collaboration for Electric Mobility

In a significant move towards expanding its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio, Suzuki Motor’s Indian division is set to deliver Toyota Motor’s first electric vehicle by spring 2025. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment as it will be the first instance where Suzuki and Toyota have partnered on an electric vehicle.

The upcoming SUV-style EV will be produced at Maruti Suzuki’s facility in Gujarat, exclusively designed for the Indian market. This innovative model has been co-developed by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu, and it will feature a robust 60 kWh battery pack. While detailed specifications regarding the vehicle’s range are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated to be a key addition to Toyota’s ambitious lineup of 10 battery-electric models scheduled for launch by 2026.

While Suzuki has yet to launch any EVs globally, it has been selling hybrid models in India, produced in collaboration with Toyota’s Indian unit. The collaboration between these automotive giants is rooted in a long-standing history of working together in traditional vehicles, now extending into the realm of battery-electric SUVs. This partnership aims to bolster both manufacturers’ efforts towards achieving a carbon-neutral future.

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to add a new production line at its Gujarat facility, capable of producing 250,000 EV units annually. This expansion underscores Maruti Suzuki’s intent to supply this electric vehicle not only within India but also to international markets, including Japan and Europe.

Toyota has reported over 108,000 battery-electric vehicles sold globally this year, accounting for 1.5% of its overall sales, including its premium Lexus brand. The partnership with Suzuki aligns with Toyota’s strategic initiatives to enhance its presence in the rapidly growing EV sector, particularly within the SUV segment.

As the automotive industry shifts towards electrification, this collaboration between Toyota and Suzuki is set to play a vital role in the transition towards sustainable mobility solutions, further solidifying their positions in the competitive electric vehicle market.
