Bihar Renewable Energy Revolution: 185 MW Solar Plant and Key Power Sector Improvements

Bihar is making significant strides in the field of renewable energy with the ongoing development of a massive 185 MW solar power plant in Kajra, Lakhisarai. This project, which is set to feature the country largest battery storage solar system, marks a key milestone in the state commitment to renewable energy. The information was shared by Energy Department Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pal during the Forum of Regulators of Eastern States, organized by the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission at Hotel Taj.

A Solar Power Push in Bihar

Pankaj Kumar Pal highlighted the state ongoing efforts to enhance its solar energy capacity, noting that solar energy has been designated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as a primary source of renewable power for the state. Under this vision, Bihar is making strides with various solar energy initiatives, including floating solar systems, solar plants along canals, and large-scale rooftop solar projects. These efforts are part of a broader push to make Bihar power companies self-reliant, with distribution companies even reporting profits for the first time last year—a significant achievement.

Improved Power Supply Across Bihar

As part of its ambitious energy reforms, Bihar has also focused on improving its electricity infrastructure. Pankaj Kumar Pal shared that the state has taken major steps to modernize its distribution and transmission systems. The number of grid devices in Bihar has grown from 45 to 168, and a comprehensive network of power substations has been established. Transformers have been installed in homes, streets, and localities, with faulty ones replaced within 24 hours.

These upgrades have had a significant impact on power availability. The state maximum electricity demand has surged from 1,000 MW to 8,005 MW, while per capita energy consumption has increased by 70 units, reaching 363 units annually. As a result, the people of Bihar are now enjoying consistent and high-quality electricity supply for 22-24 hours a day.
