Xu Guangli, a 28-year-old Chinese student, traveled every week between his home in Shandong province and Australia while completing a master’s degree at RMIT University in Melbourne. When his girlfriend returned to China after completing her studies, he was struggling with loneliness and did not want to leave his studies.

Xu said the cost of one trip was about 6,700 yuan (about Rs 78,117), which included flight tickets, taxi fare and food expenses. He used to sleep on his friend’s couch to save money, but still found it worth it to meet his girlfriend and eat delicious home-cooked meals.
