Cyber Fraud Strikes in Muzaffarpur: Man Loses ₹2.87 Lakh, Student Duped of ₹15,000
In two separate incidents of cyber fraud, residents of Muzaffarpur have been cheated out of significant amounts, with cybercriminals employing deceptive tactics to steal from victims.
₹2.87 Lakh Stolen from Man Who Sought Online Doctor Appointment
Amresh Kumar, a resident of Majhauliya Khetal in Muzaffarpur, found himself the target of a cyber scam while attempting to book an appointment with a well-known doctor online. After searching for the doctor’s contact information, Amresh came across a mobile number and reached out. He was then asked to fill in patient details through a link sent via WhatsApp. He was also told to pay a nominal fee of ₹10 for the appointment confirmation.
However, after making the ₹10 payment, Amresh grew suspicious as the fee seemed unusually low for a doctor’s consultation. He promptly blocked the number, but it was already too late. Cybercriminals had gained access to his bank account, and within moments, multiple withdrawal notifications began flooding his phone. By the time he was able to secure his account, a staggering ₹2.87 lakh had been withdrawn. Amresh has reported the incident to the police and the cybercrime portal, and an investigation is underway.
Student Duped of ₹15,000 Through Fake Bank Transaction
In another incident, a student from the Sadpura area under the Qazi Mohammadpur police station was tricked into transferring ₹15,000. The student, whose father works in a bank, received a call from someone pretending to be her father, instructing her to transfer the money to his account. The fraudster then provided a fake UPI ID.
Soon after, the student received a message showing a fake transaction ID for ₹12,000, followed by another message claiming that ₹30,000 had been sent instead of ₹3,000. The scammer insisted that the student return the remaining ₹27,000. Believing the messages to be genuine, the student sent a total of ₹15,000 in installments. It was only after confirming with her father that she realized the scam. Feeling deceived, the student lodged a complaint with the cybercrime portal and the local police.
Rising Concerns Over Cybersecurity
Both incidents highlight the increasing prevalence of cyber scams targeting unsuspecting victims. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious when dealing with financial transactions online and to report any suspicious activities immediately.
The police have registered cases in both instances, and investigations are ongoing to track down the culprits behind these fraudulent activities.
