Cyclone Fengal Brings Heavy Rain and Strong Winds to Chennai and Puducherry – Coastal Areas on High Alert

Cyclone Fengal is currently impacting coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, bringing with it heavy rainfall and strong winds. In Chennai, areas like Besant Nagar have seen trees uprooted due to the powerful winds, causing significant disruptions on the roads. Meanwhile, Puducherry is grappling with waterlogging as the rain continues to pour down heavily across several parts of the city.

Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall on the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, on the evening of November 30, with wind speeds ranging between 70 to 80 km/h. Since last night, Chennai has experienced continuous rainfall, ranging from moderate to heavy, as the cyclone intensifies.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Fengal is currently situated over the south-west Bay of Bengal and is expected to move slowly westward toward the northern Tamil Nadu coast. As it nears landfall, the wind speeds will intensify, reaching up to 80 km/h, and very heavy rainfall is predicted for the next 24 hours in several regions of South Andhra Pradesh and North Coastal Tamil Nadu.

IMD has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in low-lying areas, and cities like Chennai and Mahabalipuram are expected to face waterlogging. The Meteorological Department has advised residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay in safe places. Fishermen have also been urged not to venture out into the sea due to the dangerous conditions.

As the cyclone makes its way toward the coast, authorities are on high alert, ensuring the safety of residents in the affected areas.
