Cyclone Fengal Nears Tamil Nadu Coast: IMD Issues Warnings for Heavy Rain, Wind, and Flood Risk

As Cyclone Fengal inches closer to the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported significant weather changes in the region, particularly along the coast, as heavy rains, high tides, and strong winds begin to take effect.

The IMD has issued warnings for the north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, forecasting that the cyclone will make landfall between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, on the afternoon of November 30. The cyclone is expected to bring winds of 70-80 km/h, with gusts up to 90 km/h.

Key Updates on Cyclone Fengal:

  1. Cyclone Movement: The IMD confirmed that Cyclone Fengal is located near latitude 11.8°N and longitude 81.7°E, approximately 210 km southeast of Chennai. The cyclone is moving west-northwestward towards the coast, with landfall expected in the afternoon.
  2. Weather Changes in Coastal Areas: Coastal districts have already started experiencing changes in weather, with rising tides and rainfall impacting the region. Local authorities are on high alert, urging residents to take precautions as the storm approaches.
  3. Wind and Rain Warnings: Dr. S. Balachandran, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, highlighted that coastal districts, especially near the crossing point of Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, would experience significant impact. Wind speeds have reached 50-60 km/h, with gusts up to 70 km/h, and extremely heavy rainfall is expected between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
  4. Heavy Rainfall in Andhra Pradesh: Authorities in Andhra Pradesh have also issued a warning for “extremely heavy rainfall” in Nellore, Tirupati, and Chittoor districts for the next 24 hours, as the cyclone moves closer to the region.
  5. Preparedness Measures: In response to the cyclone, local authorities have been actively preparing for the impact. Over 4,000 boats have been returned to shore, and 2,229 relief camps have been set up across Tamil Nadu. The Department of Revenue and Disaster Management has also established toll-free numbers (112 and 1077) and a WhatsApp number (9488981070) to assist with emergency distress calls.
  6. School and College Closures: With heavy rainfall already affecting daily life, schools and colleges in the region have been closed. Further closures may occur depending on the cyclone’s progression.

Residents are advised to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions from local authorities as Cyclone Fengal approaches the coast. Emergency response teams are on standby to provide assistance as needed.
