From Seizures to Sprinting: How Nick Mayhugh Overcame Adversity to Become a Paralympic Champion
At just 14, Nick Mayhugh’s world was turned upside down when he suffered a grand mal seizure, revealing a diagnosis of cerebral palsy caused by a stroke he had in utero. The news was shocking and deeply distressing for him and his family, but it marked the beginning of an incredible journey of resilience and determination.
Early Challenges and Unyielding Determination
Diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Mayhugh faced immediate questions about his future in sports—a passion that had defined much of his early life. His father, Scott Mayhugh, recalls the moment vividly: “Nick turned around and me sitting up and his mom sitting up and Nick looking at me, and he’s like, ‘That’s not going to happen. There’s no way I’m not going to continue to play sports. There’s no way, Dad. No way.’”
Despite a doctor’s cautious outlook, Mayhugh’s resolve to continue playing soccer remained steadfast. His commitment led him to the U.S. Paralympic national team in 2017, and two years later, he helped secure a bronze medal at the Para Pan American Games and earned the title of U.S. Soccer Player of the Year with a Disability.
Pivoting to Sprinting and Paralympic Glory
With soccer not featured in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, Mayhugh shifted gears, taking up sprinting. His switch paid off spectacularly; he not only qualified but went on to win three gold medals and set a world record. His achievements were a testament to his incredible perseverance and ability to adapt to new challenges.
A Family Legacy of Inspiration
The joy of Mayhugh’s athletic accomplishments was bittersweet, as his family was also grappling with personal losses. His grandmother, Shirley Culpeper Mayhugh, battled ALS and frontotemporal dementia. She passed away on Nick’s 19th birthday, holding on just to celebrate his milestone. Her passing deeply impacted Mayhugh and his family, yet her legacy continued to inspire him.
Three years later, his grandfather, Bill Mayhugh, also passed away. Despite the heartache, Mayhugh finds strength in the memory of his grandparents, particularly his grandmother’s influence on his career choices. Following her footsteps, he ventured into the fashion world, making notable appearances such as walking the runway for the Hugo Boss Rebrand fashion show in 2022.
Mayhugh’s foray into fashion is a tribute to his grandmother’s passions and an extension of his own journey of overcoming adversity. “This was her life,” he says. “She would be over the moon about it, being able to meet some of the women that I’ve met, the people I’ve been able to work with. I know she’s looking down very proud.”
Looking Forward
Nick Mayhugh’s story is one of incredible resilience and dedication. From facing life-altering health challenges to achieving Paralympic glory and finding success in the fashion industry, his journey continues to inspire many. As he moves forward, he remains driven by the memory of his grandparents and the unwavering support of his family, embodying the spirit of perseverance and excellence.
Mayhugh’s journey reminds us that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, the strength to pursue our dreams and honor our loved ones can lead to remarkable achievements.
