Formula One drivers and the sport’s governing body, the FIA, are embroiled in increasing tension over a series of controversial regulations, including strict policies on swearing and jewelry. The friction between the two parties has escalated in recent months, with several key FIA officials leaving their positions. Amid this turmoil, George Russell, director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) and Mercedes driver, launched a pointed criticism of the FIA.

Russell’s comments came after reports of several departures within the FIA, including race steward Tim Mayer and Formula 2 deputy race director Janette Tan. These departures have left questions about the stability of the organization and added to the growing dissatisfaction among the drivers.

In a scathing remark, Russell said: “The simple question from the drivers is: which official is going to be getting fired next?” He emphasized the instability caused by the frequent turnover of FIA personnel, saying, “Naturally, in any organization, if people keep leaving, it creates a lack of stability. People have to learn the new rules, which is challenging for everyone in the FIA right now.”

Russell also expressed his frustration with the lack of transparency regarding the FIA’s decisions. He pointed to the removal of race director Niels Wittich, which occurred unexpectedly late in the season with only three races remaining. “Just when we’ve asked for a bit of transparency and consistency, we’re getting rid of two highly important people in the governing body,” Russell remarked, adding that the drivers still had not been given an explanation for Wittich’s departure.

Despite these issues, the appointment of Rui Marques as the new F1 race director has been met with some praise. Drivers, including Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, praised Marques for his performance at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, noting his open-mindedness and willingness to listen to driver concerns.

Earlier this month, the GPDA also issued a statement calling for the FIA to treat drivers with more respect and urging FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to reconsider his tone and language, particularly regarding the strict enforcement of rules on swearing and jewelry. As the FIA faces continued internal challenges, the relationship between the governing body and F1 drivers remains a growing point of contention.
