Gondia Bus Tragedy: Nine Dead as MSRTC Bus Overturns, Driver Flees
A devastating road accident occurred on Friday, November 29, in Gondia, Maharashtra, when a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus overturned, killing at least nine passengers. The tragic incident, which unfolded between 12:00 and 12:30 pm, is expected to see the death toll rise as several other passengers remain critically injured.
The accident occurred on the Gondia-Kohmara State Highway near the village of Khajri when the bus, traveling from Bhandara to Gondia, swerved to avoid a motorcycle that suddenly appeared in its path. The swift maneuver caused the bus to lose control and overturn, crushing several passengers under the weight of the vehicle.
Driver Flees the Scene
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus driver fled the scene after the accident, leaving passengers stranded. Emergency services, along with police, quickly arrived on the scene. Injured passengers were rushed to Gondia District Government KTS Hospital for medical treatment.
At the time of the crash, the bus was carrying over 35 passengers. While the official number of fatalities stands at nine, there are concerns that the death toll could climb as more critically injured passengers receive care.
Government Response and Assistance
Acting Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ordered immediate assistance for the victims, including an aid of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased. Additionally, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences, tweeting that he had instructed the Gondia Collector to ensure proper medical care for the injured, with arrangements to shift them to Nagpur if necessary. He also confirmed that injured passengers would be treated at private hospitals if required.
The police have initiated an investigation, and efforts are underway to recover the bus using a crane. Authorities are working to identify the driver and bring him to justice.
