ICC Grapples with Champions Trophy 2025 Venue Stalemate Amid India-Pakistan Dispute
The International Cricket Council (ICC) held a brief virtual meeting today to discuss the 2025 Champions Trophy, but a resolution on the tournament’s venue remains elusive. The meeting, lasting just over 15 minutes, saw members align with India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan, citing a lack of government clearance.
“All members are aware of India’s stance and have aligned with the decision,” an ICC official stated.
Two Options on the Table
The ICC Board is now evaluating two possible scenarios:
- Hybrid Model: Matches involving India are played at a neutral venue, while other games are held in Pakistan.
- Complete Relocation: The tournament moves entirely out of Pakistan, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) retaining hosting rights.
The board is expected to reconvene in the coming days to finalize the decision, with pressure mounting as the deadline to announce fixtures 100 days before the tournament’s start has already been missed.
PCB’s Stand
The PCB has firmly opposed the hybrid model thus far, and their response in the next meeting will be critical. If they reject the hybrid model or threaten to withdraw, the ICC may decide to relocate the tournament entirely—potentially even proceeding without Pakistan’s participation.
“At this stage, don’t be surprised if the tournament is played outside Pakistan, and even without Pakistan,” the ICC official hinted.
A Resolution Needed
The Champions Trophy 2025 is at a crossroads, and the ICC faces the daunting task of balancing the interests of all stakeholders. Whether through a compromise or a significant shift in plans, the coming days will determine the fate of one of cricket’s marquee events.
