Foreign Minister Highlights Situation in Lok Sabha
In a statement to the Lok Sabha, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar revealed that India is closely monitoring the rising attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Reports from August 2024 indicate several incidents of violence, including vandalism of Hindu homes, religious sites, and business establishments. These incidents have raised alarms in India, with the government conveying its concerns directly to Bangladesh.
Jaishankar highlighted specific attacks that occurred during Durga Puja in 2024, including the thefts at the Tantibazar pavilion in Dhaka and the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple in Satkhira. In response to these attacks, the Bangladesh government deployed the Army and Border Guard Bangladesh to ensure the safety of temples and the peaceful celebration of Durga Puja. The Indian government has been in constant touch with the Indian Commission in Dhaka to monitor the situation closely.
India’s Strong Call for Protection of Minorities
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the ongoing violence and reiterated India’s stance on the matter. He emphasized that India had raised concerns with Bangladesh, urging the government to take full responsibility for the protection and security of minorities in the country.
The Arrest of Mahant Chinmoy Krishna Das
The Indian government has also expressed concern over the arrest of Mahant Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was taken into custody by Dhaka Police on charges of treason. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the legal process surrounding his arrest is ongoing and expressed hope that it will be conducted fairly and transparently. The arrest has sparked protests from the Hindu community, who are demanding his release.
