India Takes 1-0 Lead in Border-Gavaskar Trophy; Pujara Suggests Batting Order Changes for Second Test
India claimed a dominant 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Optus Stadium, taking a crucial 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Led by a stellar 161 from Yashasvi Jaiswal and an unbeaten 100 from Virat Kohli, India responded emphatically after being bowled out for 150, declaring their second innings at 487/6. Australia struggled in reply, falling to 238 all out, with Jasprit Bumrah’s 3/42 playing a pivotal role in India’s comprehensive win. This marked India’s biggest-ever run victory on Australian soil.
Ahead of the second Test, scheduled for December 6 in Adelaide, veteran Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has advised KL Rahul to bat at No. 3 if Rohit Sharma returns to open. After India’s commanding performance in Perth, Pujara emphasized the importance of maintaining a steady and balanced batting lineup.
Rahul, who scored 26 and 77 in the first Test, has proven his adaptability. Pujara’s recommendation aims to ensure consistency in the batting order, with Rahul’s natural game suited for the No. 3 position. Pujara shared his thoughts with ESPN Cricinfo, saying, “If Rohit opens, KL should bat at No. 3. He’s well-suited for the role at the top of the order, and I hope we don’t tinker with that.”
Pujara also discussed the middle-order balance, suggesting that Shubman Gill could move to No. 5, where he can play freely if he comes in after the first few sessions. “No. 5 allows him to settle in if we lose a couple of early wickets but also gives him the chance to play his natural game later,” said Pujara.
As India prepares for the second Test, they will play a two-day practice match against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, offering the team a chance to fine-tune their strategies, especially with the pink ball set to be used in Adelaide. Pujara’s insights on the batting order and team dynamics are expected to play a key role in shaping India’s approach for the next challenge in the Border-Gavaskar series.
