Kane Williamson Shines on Return to International Cricket with Impressive 93 in First Test Against England
Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson made a stunning comeback to international cricket, scoring a gritty 93 runs in the opening Test against England at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Williamson’s performance was a highlight of the day, as his knock helped New Zealand reach 319/8 by stumps on Day 1.
The match also marked a significant milestone for England’s Joe Root, who was playing his 150th Test match.
Williamson was called upon to bat early in the innings, after Devon Conway was dismissed in the second over. The 34-year-old displayed great composure under pressure, navigating a challenging phase before flourishing in the middle overs. He formed vital partnerships with Rachin Ravindra, Tom Latham, and Daryl Mitchell, driving New Zealand’s progress.
Just seven runs short of his 33rd Test century, Williamson was dismissed by Gus Atkinson, who made a strong comeback with the old ball. His knock included 10 boundaries, and he narrowly missed reaching the 9000-run mark in Test cricket, now just 26 runs away from the milestone, which he is likely to achieve in the second innings.
New Zealand’s total of 319/8 was bolstered by late resistance from Glenn Phillips and Tim Southee, who are currently at the crease, having added 21 runs for the ninth wicket.
On the bowling front, England’s Shoaib Bashir impressed with the best figures, taking four wickets, while Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse claimed two wickets each.
