A 50-year-old man, Raj Sidpara, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years for the savage murder of his girlfriend, Tarnjeet Riaz, also known as Tarnjeet Chagger. The horrifying incident occurred on May 6 at Sidpara’s residence on Tarbat Road in the East Midlands.
Emergency services were called by Sidpara, who claimed his girlfriend was unresponsive. They found Riaz with severe facial trauma and multiple broken ribs. Despite admitting to manslaughter in October, Sidpara denied intending to kill her. However, evidence presented at Leicester Crown Court revealed a sustained and brutal attack.
Judge William Harbage, delivering the verdict, described the assault as “savage and merciless,” stating that Sidpara had punched, kicked, and stamped on Riaz. The court also highlighted Sidpara’s violent past, including 24 prior convictions for 46 offences, some involving threats and harassment towards former partners. His struggles with alcohol dependence syndrome were noted.
Detective Inspector Emma Matts condemned the crime, saying, “Tarnjeet was killed by someone she trusted and was in a relationship with—someone who should have protected her, not made her fear for her life.”
The sentencing coincided with White Ribbon Day, a campaign by Leicestershire Police aimed at ending violence against women and girls. Authorities urged victims of domestic abuse to seek help and support.
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the need for continued vigilance in addressing and preventing such crimes.
