NGO Urges Indian Government to Pressure Bangladesh Over Rising Violence Against Hindus
Kolkata: In light of the escalating violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, a prominent NGO advocating for Bangladeshi refugees has called on the Indian government to exert diplomatic pressure on its neighboring country to ensure the safety of religious minorities. This appeal follows numerous reports of attacks on the Hindu community, raising concerns about the systematic weakening of their rights under the current administration in Bangladesh.
Bimal Majumdar, President of the Bangladesh Udbastu Unnayan Sangsad (BUUS), an NGO focused on the welfare of Bangladeshi refugees, highlighted the growing insecurity faced by Hindus in Bangladesh. Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, Majumdar criticized the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, for failing to protect the rights of the Hindu minority and ensure their safety.
“The government of Bangladesh has failed to provide security for its Hindu population,” Majumdar stated, urging India to intervene diplomatically to stop the atrocities against the minority community. His remarks come amid increasing reports of violence, including attacks on Hindu temples, homes, and businesses, as well as the destruction of religious sites.
The situation has raised alarms both within India and internationally. Human rights organizations have documented several incidents of violence against Hindus, prompting fears within the community about their continued safety. Historically, Hindus made up around 22% of Bangladesh’s population during the 1971 Liberation War, but today that number has dwindled to about 8%, largely due to socio-political marginalization, migration, and frequent violent attacks.
Majumdar emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The Hindu community in Bangladesh lives in constant fear, and the government’s indifference to their plight is alarming.” He called on the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to raise the issue in bilateral talks with Bangladesh and demand immediate, concrete action to end the violence and protect the minority population.
This growing crisis has drawn widespread attention, with hopes for international pressure to safeguard the rights and security of Hindus in Bangladesh.
