NIT Rourkela Hosts International Conference on Bio-Processes for Sustainable Environment and Energy

Rourkela: The fourth international conference titled ‘Bio-process for Sustainable Environment and Energy-2024’ began at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela on Friday. Organized by the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, the conference has attracted over 100 participants from across India. Running until December 1, the event aims to discuss innovative strategies in bio-processes to foster environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

The conference features contributions from leading experts from around the world. Eminent speakers from international institutions such as the University of Barcelona (Spain), Guangdong Technion (China), and the University of Oulu (Finland) are participating virtually. In addition, representatives from India’s top institutes like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee are also sharing their insights.

Inauguration and Launch of Research Compendium

The event was inaugurated at the TIIR building of NIT Rourkela. The opening ceremony was addressed by Organizing Secretary Prof. Angana Sarkar, who welcomed the participants. The chief guest, BR Palai, Executive Director of Operations at SAIL-RSP and an alumnus of NIT Rourkela, emphasized the critical role of bio-processes in reducing dependency on fossil fuels, minimizing waste, and promoting sustainable industrial practices. He stated that the conference will offer practical solutions to achieve the ambitious goal of zero carbon emissions.

During the ceremony, a compendium book showcasing the research contributions presented at the conference was launched. This is seen as a significant step in NIT Rourkela’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices and contributing to global discussions on environmental and energy issues.
