Pakistani Authorities Seek Arrest of Imran Khan’s Wife, Bushra Bibi, in Multi-Million Pound Corruption Case
Pakistani authorities are intensifying their efforts to arrest Bushra Bibi, the wife of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, after she failed to appear in court for a corruption case involving 190 million pounds (50 billion Pakistani Rupees).
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) attempted to arrest Bibi at her residence in Peshawar on November 23, but was unsuccessful as she was reportedly not home when the team and police arrived, according to a PTI report.
Bibi, who resides in Peshawar, had been issued non-bailable arrest warrants by an accountability court on November 22, following her absence from eight consecutive court hearings. The case revolves around accusations that she and her husband misused a substantial sum of money originally returned to Pakistan by the UK’s National Crime Agency, which was part of a settlement with a property tycoon. Authorities allege the money, which was meant for the national treasury, was used for personal gain.
Bibi, a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust, is accused of using the funds to acquire 458 kanals of land for the construction of Al-Qadir University in Jhelum. This comes after the couple allegedly collaborated with the businessman to help establish the university.
Last month, Bibi was granted bail in a separate case related to the Toshakhana scandal, after spending nine months in custody. The legal proceedings against her continue to unfold, adding further pressure on the former first lady and her husband’s political future.
