Patna’s Itripalsi Traffic Cameras Generate Rs 79 Crore in Revenue in Just 18 Months

Patna’s smart traffic system, Itripalsi, has proven to be a major success, generating a significant revenue of Rs 79 crore from traffic fines between March 2023 and November 2024. This is nearly one-third of the total cost of the project, which was set up with an investment of Rs 225 crore.

The city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (Itripalsi) operates automated cameras that issue challans for traffic violations such as speeding, running red lights, and driving without helmets or seat belts. These cameras, equipped with automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology, have significantly increased compliance with traffic rules, as vehicle owners now fear receiving fines directly on their mobile phones for violations.

Patna Smart City has installed over 3,357 cameras throughout the city, monitoring a range of violations. These include speed violations, red light infractions, and improper driving behaviors such as mobile phone use while driving or driving in the wrong direction.

The city’s traffic system is continuously monitored at the Smart City’s Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), where a dedicated team ensures the smooth operation of the cameras and enforcement of traffic regulations.

The Itripalsi project not only aims to improve traffic safety but also contributes to a cleaner, more efficient system by using advanced technology to enforce traffic laws in real time. As a result, the presence of these cameras has become a strong deterrent, ensuring that citizens follow safety measures like wearing helmets and seat belts, contributing to overall road safety in Patna.
