Threats of Violence Against Lawmakers Surge, Prompting Calls for Accountability
Democratic lawmakers have reported receiving violent threats over the Thanksgiving holiday, including bomb threats and swatting incidents, as political tensions in the U.S. continue to escalate. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the threats, noting that they included detailed warnings of pipe bombs placed in mailboxes and hoax calls designed to provoke armed police responses. The messages were signed with “MAGA,” referring to former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
“Thanks to the swift action from law enforcement, no bombs were found, and Members of Congress and their families were kept safe during the holiday,” Jeffries stated. He emphasized that threats of violence against any elected official are unacceptable, calling for full prosecution of those responsible for political violence.
Some lawmakers from Connecticut, including Representatives Jim Himes, Rosa DeLauro, and Jahana Hayes, confirmed they had been targeted by these threats. Hayes, among others, shared their experiences on social media, describing the disturbing nature of the incidents.
Swatting, the practice of falsely reporting dangerous incidents to provoke a police response, was one of the tactics used in these threats.
The holiday threats follow a similar wave of incidents involving President-elect Trump’s cabinet nominees, who have also been targeted by bomb threats and hoax calls. Among those affected were Howard Lutnick, Trump’s pick for Commerce Secretary, and Representative Elise Stefanik, nominated to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Lutnick’s New York residence received an emailed bomb threat earlier this week.
The FBI confirmed it is investigating multiple threats against Trump’s incoming administration, noting that such incidents have become increasingly common. “We are aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees,” the FBI said, stressing its commitment to working with law enforcement partners to address these threats.
These incidents reflect a disturbing rise in politically motivated threats against public figures, including high-profile swatting cases earlier this year, such as one involving a false fire report at the White House. The rise in such threats underscores growing concerns about political violence in the U.S., highlighting the need for stronger safeguards for elected officials and public figures.
