McLoughlin’s journey with Dubai Duty Free began in 1983, and over the course of four decades, he witnessed and contributed to the remarkable evolution of Dubai from a modest creekside trading port to a modern metropolis, home to iconic landmarks including the world’s tallest building. Under his leadership, Dubai Duty Free became a staple for millions of travelers passing through Dubai International Airport, now recognized as the busiest airport for international travel globally.
During his tenure, McLoughlin played a crucial role in catering to diverse customer tastes, offering a wide range of duty-free products from electronics to luxury items. “It’s a very Middle Eastern thing,” he remarked in a 1987 interview with the Los Angeles Times, emphasizing the need to meet various preferences.
His contributions to the retail sector were widely acknowledged, with Dubai Duty Free reporting impressive sales figures even in challenging times. For instance, in 2023 alone, the outlet sold 6 million cans of beer, 2.3 million bottles of whiskey, and 3.3 million bottles of perfume. The resurgence of sales followed a slump during the COVID-19 pandemic, illustrating McLoughlin’s effective leadership.
Born in 1943 in Ballinasloe, Ireland, McLoughlin began his career in the duty-free industry at Shannon Airport in 1969, the site of the world’s first duty-free operation. He arrived in Dubai in July 1983 as part of a ten-member team tasked with establishing the airport’s duty-free operations. Initially meant to be a six-month contract, his tenure extended to an impressive 40 years.
Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, expressed condolences following McLoughlin’s passing, recognizing him as “one of Dubai’s beautiful faces and a brilliant mind with a kind and loving heart.”
McLoughlin was also known for sponsoring tennis and golf tournaments and supporting the Irish community in Dubai. In 2014, he was awarded the Irish President’s Distinguished Service Award for his contributions, underscoring his integral role within the Irish community in the UAE.
He is survived by his wife, Breeda, son Niall, daughters Taina and Mandy, and a loving family. McLoughlin’s legacy will continue to influence the retail landscape in Dubai, as well as the lives of those he inspired throughout his remarkable career.
