Festive Anticipation in Poplar
Set in the bustling neighborhood of Poplar in 1969, the upcoming Christmas special promises to capture the festive spirit as an entertainment fair arrives in town. The midwives of Nonnatus House continue their dedicated work, assisting families and bringing new life into the world. However, excitement turns to tension as news breaks of an escaped prisoner hiding in the area, heightening the stakes for the residents preparing for their carol concert.

In this special, fans will see the Turner children caught up in the Blue Peter Christmas appeal, gathering toy cars and scrap metal. Additionally, viewers can expect to witness Miss Higgins (Georgie Glen) welcoming her grandson Harry for the holidays, while Violet (Annabelle Apsion) hosts a mince pie competition, and the Buckles prepare for Reggie’s homecoming amid the festive chaos.
First-look images from the special showcase characters singing carols outside Nonnatus House, children eagerly opening Christmas gifts, and Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi) dressed as Father Christmas, complete with a red sack and bell, in a hospital ward.
A Unique Holiday Treat
Heidi Thomas, the show’s creator and writer, expressed her excitement about the two-part format, stating, “Who doesn’t love finding an extra, unexpected gift under the Christmas tree? When I was asked to write a two-part Christmas special for 2024, I couldn’t say no.” Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris echoed her sentiments, saying, “For the first time, viewers can enjoy a two-part festive special this Christmas. Heidi has crafted a spellbinding episode that I know will delight our loyal fans.”
Lindsay Salt, the director of the BBC drama, emphasized that Heidi and the team have prepared “a perfect gift” for viewers, ensuring a memorable holiday experience.
Upcoming Series and Continued Storylines
The two-part Christmas special will air on BBC One, coinciding with the ongoing production of Series 14, which is set to wrap filming in a few weeks. In addition to the Christmas special, eight new episodes are slated for release in early 2025 on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, alongside the announcement of a 15th series for the long-running show.
Recap of Series 13 Finale
As the show prepares for its Christmas festivities, fans are reminded of the emotional conclusion of Series 13, which left viewers teary-eyed. The finale centered around two poignant storylines: Miss Higgins saying goodbye to her long-lost son, Victor, who was forced into adoption decades earlier after becoming pregnant at 21, and Trixie revealing her plans to reunite with her husband, Matthew, in New York after his financial struggles.
With the excitement of the two-part Christmas special on the horizon, “Call the Midwife” continues to capture the hearts of its audience, blending warmth, drama, and festive cheer in true holiday spirit.
